VELAZQUEZ MENDEZ, Antonio Magdiel; REYES TREJO, Benito; ALVAREZ MOCTEZUMA, José Guadalupe    RODRIGUEZ-DE LA O, José Luis. Hypoglycaemic effect of Acrocomia mexicana extracts in Wistar rats. []. , 44, 1, pp.39-44. ISSN 1870-0195.

A previous study of Acrocomia mexicana of an accession localized at Tamaulipas afforded coyolosa, this substance decreased the blood glucose level in rats and mice. In the present study, the hypoglycemic effect of hexane, chloroform and methanol extracts from roots of A. mexicana collected from Chiapas State was evaluated. Oral administration of these extracts in normoglycemic rats resulted in a significant decrease in blood glucose. The methanol extract was percolated over a silica gel column to afford five fractions F1 to F5, which decreased the blood glucose levels in rats. Fraction 5 (F5) was the most active. All the extracts were analyzed over column chromatography to yield β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and mannitol identified as its acetyl derivative by means of an X-ray diffraction study.
