Abstract

TEMKIN YEDWAB, Benjamín; AVILA FORCADA, Sara  and  MARTINEZ GUERRERO, Esther. THE DIFFERENTIAL IMPACT OF ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION AND DEMOCRACY ON CO 2 EMISSIONS IN RICH AND POOR COUNTRIES. Rev. Int. Contam. Ambient [online]. 2018, vol.34, n.1, pp.169-183. ISSN 0188-4999.  https://doi.org/10.20937/rica.2018.34.01.15.

This article analyzes the differential impact of economic globalization, the size and the composition of the economy and the nature of the political regime over national CO2emission levels. We found that emissions are positively correlated with the national level of economic development, with the relative weight of certain sectors in the economy, as well as with the degree of each country’s insertion on the global economy. However, we found that globalization related to the emissions grow faster in the poorer countries than in the richer ones. Our results also show that national democratic institutions do not guarantee lower levels of CO2 emissions.

Keywords : economic development; CO2; trade liberalization; democratization.
