Abstract

SAIZ-ECHEZARRETA, Vanesa; GOMEZ-LORENZINI, Paulina  and  GALLETERO-CAMPOS, Belén. Institutional tensions in journalism in relation to feminist protests in Chile. Perf. latinoam. [online]. 2023, vol.31, n.62, 009.  Epub May 31, 2024. ISSN 0188-7653.  https://doi.org/10.18504/pl3162-009-2023.

The feminist protests in Chilean universities in 2018 were a mediatized event that, for the newspapers El Mercurio and La Tercera implied a coverage that reveals tensions between the enunciative voice of journalism as an institution and the need to echo grassroots feminism, the protagonist of the movements. From an indexical semiotics, which recognises texts as cultural objects, this study, based on 130 pieces, reveals, in media with different editorial positions, a shared journalistic discourse emanating from a gendered institution, which shows difficulty in understanding and communicating the phenomenon, as evidenced by the enunciative positioning adopted.

Keywords : journalism; feminism; semiotic; institutionalism; Chile; public opinion.
