Abstract

IMOLESI, María Elena. Jesuit Solutions in Missionaries Settings: The Application of Probabilism in the Resolution of Doubts about Marriages in the Guaraníes’ Reductions. Hist. graf [online]. 2017, n.49, pp.57-84. ISSN 1405-0927.

This paper addresses some of the problems arising from the enforcement of the doctrine of probable opinions by the Jesuits, with special reference to the Guarani marriages. Probabilism seems to have been a solution of a legal problem of universal order, like the relationship between the general laws and the individual and concrete cases. Recent work has addressed the significant importance of the discussions and evolution of the problem of probabilism both inside the Society of Jesus and its complex relations with the outside world. Similarly, the idea of a monolithic, centralized institution in the figure of General is questioned in this paper. The general and provincial congregations were the ones which often brought on resolution of moral cases. These contributions allow to put in a new context the question of the doctrine of probable opinions and understand the complexity of the decisions made within the company.

Keywords : jesuitic doctrine; probabilism; Compañía de Jesús; General Congregations.
