Abstract

GOMEZ-JORDANA FERARY, Sonia. Argumentation within language, polyphony and proverbs. Tóp. Sem [online]. 2016, n.35, pp.103-131. ISSN 2594-0619.

The aim of this study is to provide a semantic description of contemporary proverb occurrences, particularly from the theory of the argumentation within language and the theory of polyphony. The study of paremias in context offers a description of their function in discourse based on their relationship to the speaker's own sentences. We will thus valid the semantic structure of the proverb in terms of P implies Q, a structure that passes on to the speaker's sentence. Appealing to a commonly accepted formula ensures the validity of a personal claim. Furthermore, we will comment upon the presence of some kind of analogy between literal and formulaic meanings of a proverb. We will as well clarify the relation between the value of the generic sentence and its application to a specific situation.

Keywords : analogy; proverbs; argumentation within language.
