Abstract

HUERTA IBARRA, Israel. Biomedical informatics courses at Mexican Medical Schools. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2019, vol.19, n.79, pp.15-34. ISSN 1665-2673.

In Mexico, the importance of biomedical informatics (IB) in the national health system, even though increasing, it still lacks of a critical mass of health professionals capable of exploiting systems derived from this discipline. A documentary research was carried out in order to determinate the number of medical schools providing IB training: 24.7% out of 167 schools included IB training, which is reflected in the 26.5% of the total number of medical graduates during the 2016-2017 school year. These schools cover 54.8% of federal entities in the country. Proposals to strengthen the inclusion of IB courses among medical students, as well as aspects to consider in a postgraduate course in the field are mentioned.

Keywords : Educational informatics; biomedical informatics; medical education; postgraduate studies; education and technology.
