Abstract

GUERRERO MARTINEZ, Fernando. A weaving of corporalities and interiorities in the Chuj notion of person. LiminaR [online]. 2022, vol.20, n.1, e885.  Epub Sep 12, 2022. ISSN 2007-8900.  https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v20i1.885.

This article is an overview of the Chuj notion of person examined through an analysis of the corporal and interior entities that make up an individual. It explores the array of relationships that are woven between different entities of the Chuj cosmology and their influence on the conceptualization of “human being”, based on data from the Chuj language itself as spoken in Mexican and Guatemalan communities. The complexity of the “soul” entities as relational devices between beings and elements of the cosmos is highlighted, as is the significance of a social and ontological hierarchy that grants humans and divinities a historical condition defining their corporality in accordance with their role in the world.

Keywords : cosmology; human beings; divinities; animals; nature; Mayan; Chuj.
