Abstract

LOPEZ RADRIGAN, Constanza  and  RAMIREZ FUENTES, Jaime. Device of medicalization and disability: a critical analysis from the South. Andamios [online]. 2022, vol.19, n.49, pp.45-67.  Epub June 05, 2023. ISSN 2594-1917.  https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v19i49.919.

The article performs a cross-theoretical reading between disability studies and Foucauldian perspectives, in order to analyze the desecration of modern biopower and medicalization devices that placed disability as an undesirable deviation from normative existence. Its objectification from social movements and studies made possible the emergence in the Global North of a device that displaced its circumscription from the medical field but which was characterized by its production in spaces crossed by patterns of capitalist and colonial development, that still epistemologically and politically condition the approaches to it in other locations around the globe. Along these lines, the article gives an account of the reconfigurations of the devices, together with the decolonial resistances from the Global South.

Keywords : Medicalization; device; disability; postcoloniality; decoloniality.
