The methodological moments of a state of the art on mental health in the indigenous peoples of Colombia are presented, with the purpose of making a contribution in the foundation of new research and the development of intervention strategies based on documentary evidence. Also, it reflects on the need to have the perspective and participation of indigenous researchers in these studies and the importance of incorporating the knowledge of Indigenous Peoples is recognized for the correct conceptualization of the phenomenon under study as mental health. The challenges and limitations of this research are presented and it is suggested that the approach and procedure described may be useful in other studies related to indigenous communities.
