Abstract

MARTINEZ HERNANDEZ, Gerardo. “Obey but not comply”: The failure as a Protomedic of Francisco Hernandez in Mexico City. 1571-1574. Andamios [online]. 2022, vol.19, n.49, pp.417-440.  Epub June 05, 2023. ISSN 2594-1917.  https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v19i49.936.

This article reviews the confrontation between 1571 and 1574 that the Royal Protomedico Francisco Hernández had against the Royal Audience, the local authority of Mexico City and the medical guild of New Spain. For the first time this struggle is analyzed taking into account the background of the viceroyalty health policy, which was in the initial process of forming medical institutions. It is concluded that Hernandez’s management failed due to the obstacles that were imposed on him. The main sources of this study are documents from the National Historical Archive of Spain, the General Archive of the Nation of Mexico, and the Historical Archive of Mexico City.

Keywords : Health policy; New Spain; Mexico City; Protomedicos; 16th Century.
