Abstract

MARTINON VELAZQUEZ, Manuel. The Party System and Elections in the Municipalities of Campeche: Characteristics, Contexts and Evolution, 1997-2021. Región y sociedad [online]. 2022, vol.34, e1622.  Epub June 01, 2023. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2022/34/1622.

Objective: to analyze the changes experienced by partisan electoral competition in the municipalities of Campeche, between 1997 and 2021. Methodology: descriptive-statistical analysis combining the typology of Giovanni Sartori’s party systems; the indicators of margin of victory, opposition strength and effective number of matches, and the postulates of the theory of modernization. Results: it is observed that the high competitiveness and the party system of moderate pluralism were established as a recurring feature of municipal elections, and that socioeconomic conditions still influence their configuration. Value: the analysis broadens the knowledge about the way political changes have taken place at the municipal level, within a state that until 2021 was governed uninterruptedly by the Institutional Revolutionary Party. Limitations: the depth and the implications of said changes are beyond the purposes of this article. Conclusions: the competitiveness and partisan pluralism are manifested differently in the municipalities of Campeche and throughout the 24 years that were analyzed.

Keywords : party system, Sartori; municipal elections; Campeche; partisan pluralism; modernization theory.
