Abstract

MORALES RAMIREZ, María Ascensión. The gender dimension: absent from the pension reform in Mexico. Rev. latinoam. derecho soc [online]. 2021, n.33, pp.135-155.  Epub Dec 16, 2021. ISSN 2448-7899.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iij.24487899e.2021.33.16326.

Women in their old age are particularly hard hit by the accumulation of the disadvantages they have faced for years. They have considerably poorer prospects than men about the amount of their future pensions and are more likely to spend the last years of their lives in poverty. A combination of direct and indirect disparities works against them: the differences between men and women in employment are exacerbated by the design of the contributory pension system.

Including a gender dimension in these systems is a matter that can no longer be postponed if we are to eradicate the inequalities and discrimination that prevent women from obtaining a pension, a dignified retirement and economic independence in their old age.

Keywords : gender; gender equality; pension systems; formal employment; unpaid work.
