Abstract

VALENCIA ESCAMILLA, Laura. Legislative Representation and Re-election in Mexico: The 2021 Federal Election. Rev. mex. opinión pública [online]. 2022, n.32, pp.97-114.  Epub Apr 08, 2022. ISSN 2448-4911.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.24484911e.2022.32.79992.

The article aims to analyze the exercise of legislative re-election in the 2021 elections based on the elimination of consecutive prohibition under two criteria: re-election as a right and as a component of parliamentary professionalization. To do this, it reviews the development of the transition from recidivism to re-election as an institutional change, and also identifies the effect that said change has on the legislative careers of popular representatives from a cyclical point of view and of continuity in the interests of the federal deputies who are re-elected for the first time in the 2021 elections. To that end, a database was developed on the trajectories of Mexican legislators based on their experience in different positions of representation and in local and federal public administration.

Keywords : Legislative reelection; legislative careers; parliamentary professionalization; political representation; social accountability.
