Abstract
TORRES MARTINEZ, Rubén. Pandemic and Expectations. Split-Ticket Voting and Rational Voting in the 2018 and 2021 Elections in Yucatán. Rev. mex. opinión pública [online]. 2022, n.32, pp.117-132. Epub Apr 08, 2022. ISSN 2448-4911. https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.24484911e.2022.32.80607.
This article analyzes the process of bipartisanship and split-ticket voting that seems to characterize Yucatán so far in the 21st century. Special emphasis is placed on the results of the 2018 and 2021 elections, which seem to depart from the logic of said voting. Two dissonant events appear to explain that impression at first glance: AMLO’s rise to power in 2018 and the Covid-19 pandemic. However, when analyzing the results of both elections in detail, it can be inferred that the split-ticket voting is actually notoriously still present. Better yet, the way in which the Yucatán voter exercises suffrage allows for observing that the choice is more rational than one might suppose at first. The handling of the pandemic at different levels of government confirms this and would explain how, despite a resounding victory such as AMLO’s in 2018 and the PAN’s in 2021, the differentiated vote is always still there.
