This paper describes a government policy implemented in Argentina against disinformation and malicious news. This is NODIO, the Disinformation and Symbolic Violence Observatory in Digital Media and Platforms. The author frames freedom of speech in the rule of law and democracy, considering that it is one of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the current institutional and regulatory mechanisms. Likewise, he shows that the disagreements about freedom of expression that NODIO generated do not allow evaluating the results of this policy. Given that there is not enough evidence about what the government intends with this observatory, only four tentative hypotheses are proposed and the problems that each one entails regarding freedom of expression. He concludes with a reflection on the relationship between doxa and episteme in the post-truth era, showing a possible use of artificial intelligence and algorithms by social scientists to learn public opinion. Following Max Weber’s traditional distinction between accountability and conviction, the author suggests that both are values in danger for both politicians and social scientists.
