Abstract

HERNANDEZ-SARMIENTO, Ricardo et al. Prevalence and susceptibility profile of community-acquired methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in young athletes. Rev. mex. pediatr. [online]. 2019, vol.86, n.1, pp.13-17.  Epub Dec 03, 2020. ISSN 0035-0052.

Objective:

To determine the prevalence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA-AC) in a risk population in Bogotá, Colombia, and to analyze the profile of susceptibility to alternative antimicrobials to vancomycin for the treatment of infections with this microorganism.

Material and methods:

Cross-sectional study in young soccer players. Ninety-one samples of nasal swabs were obtained for microbiological analysis; Resistance to antimicrobial agents was carried out using the Kirby-Bauer method and an epsilometry test (E-test) for the MRSA-CA samples.

Results:

Of the total samples obtained, only one was positive for MRSA-AC (2%) and 43 for methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (SAMS) (48%), which shows the low prevalence of this strain in the population studied.

Conclusion:

Despite the low prevalence of CA-MRSA strains, it is important to emphasize measures of personal hygiene, including handwashing and wound care that result from sports competitions.

Keywords : Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus; healthy carrier; antimicrobial drug resistance; children and adolescents.
