Abstract

MEDINA-GAONA, Lourdes Adriana  and  NEIRA-MAGUEY, Eduardo. Healthy newborn with a single artery and a true knot in the umbilical cord. Rev. mex. pediatr. [online]. 2022, vol.89, n.4, pp.158-161.  Epub June 02, 2023. ISSN 0035-0052.  https://doi.org/10.35366/109591.

Introduction:

the umbilical cord is characterized by having two arteries and one vein; the presence of a single artery is the most frequent anomaly, but it is a very rare condition, the same happens when there is a true knot. We present a newborn in whom both conditions were identified at birth.

Case report:

this patient is a male newborn with 38.3 weeks of gestation. His mother was 29 years-old with a history of two abortions. He was born by cesarean section, with a weight of 3,030 grams, and Apgar 9/10. On physical examination, the umbilical cord had only one artery, one vein, as well as the presence of a true knot. No major malformation was detected. Renal ultrasound was normal.

Conclusion:

the association of a single artery together with a true knot in the umbilical cord is extraordinary. These findings do not necessarily mean that the newborn has congenital malformation or clinical condition.

Keywords : umbilical cord; true knot; single umbilical artery; newborn.
