The aim of this article is to explain the origin and historical evolution of negotiable instruments, as well as the transformations that they have experienced and their current consolidation. In this way, several legal instruments are analyzed, among them some European commerce codes of the XIXth century, in order to describe the most important characteristics of the above mentioned evolution and transformation. Finally, a reference is made to the regulation of Mexican commercial law related to negotiable instruments, to be able to characterize what can be called negotiable instruments law of this country.
