Over the 20th century, the countries now located in the eastern side of the European Union (EU) underwent domestic and international political processes different to those experienced by the countries of the EU-15. Consolidation of their democratic status presents challenges. This historical and institutional legacy of the East includes specific characteristics which are observable in the make-up of the political groupings of the European Parliament and the European Council, where they trend more to the right wing. Their presence has been highly favorable for the dominance of the of the current led by the European People’s Party (PPE), in which Germany plays a central role.
