Abstract

REYGADAS, Luis. Distinction and reciprocity: Notes for an anthropology of equality. Nueva antropol [online]. 2008, vol.21, n.69, pp.9-31. ISSN 0185-0636.

This article analyzes the cultural construction of equality, with emphasis in the symbolic processes which express and, at the same time, constitute reciprocal relationships. At a time when purely economic research of inequalities is stagnant, there often is a gap between reciprocity analysis and research on inequalities. In this paper the author underlines the links between two types of societies: the traditional groups where mutually binding exchanges and mechanisms are predominant, and those where there are highly hierarchical modern institutions. In doing so, it's necessary to go beyond income distribution, and recognize that exclusion and inequality are embedded in the framework of power relationships and cultural dynamics.

Keywords : inequality; fairness; symbolism; exclusion; stratification; reciprocity.
