Abstract

ACUNA DELGADO, Ángel. Del chamanismo y la festividad social al futbol yanomami: una nueva manera de compartir y competir. Nueva antropol [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.80, pp.111-137. ISSN 0185-0636.

Football, introduced to the Venezuelan municipality of Alto Orinoco by missionaries, teachers, and radio broadcasts, has achieved remarkable success among the resident Yanomami population, but this does not mean that shamanic practices (hekuramou) to confront the disease and the ritualized struggle in social festivities (reahu) have lost their traditional force as a means of conflict resolution at different levels. Based on the author's ethnographic experience, this text reflects on the relationship between these traditional shamanic practices and social festivities, which include the football practiced by the Yanomami, in order to understand how the values of a practice projected into the future gains momentum and interest from certain practical values anchored in the past.

Keywords : Yanomami; football; shamanism; society; hekuramou; reahu.
