Abstract

NIETO CALLEJA, Raúl. La construcción simbólica del miedo en la ciudad de México. Nueva antropol [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.81, pp.33-53. ISSN 0185-0636.

Through ethnographic examples, this article proposes that fear, besides being an individual experience, is constructed socially and politically, becoming an element from which urban order is organized. In this context, fear is one of the possible emotional moods for building everyday life in the city. Fear in Mexico City affects the city in a particular way that is different from how it affects the rest of society. However, the city has its own resources to face it. Both situations are developed in this article, questioning a set of social narratives by which the Mexico City population explains changes that they perceive in their experience of living and moving through the contemporary city, where fear of urban life seems to be one of its defining elements.

Keywords : fear; imaginaries; Mexico City; uncertainty; urban narratives.
