Abstract
BAYONA ESCAT, Eugenia. Rituales indígenas y otras escenificaciones turísticas en los Altos de Chiapas. Nueva antropol [online]. 2015, vol.28, n.82, pp.31-50. ISSN 0185-0636.
For several decades, new tourism activities have invaded the international market. The kind of visitor who pursues alternative tourism seeks authentic experiences through contact with and immersion in worlds they consider to be traditional and exotic. This article refers to tourism in the Tzotzil-Tzeltal highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, an area which has become a national and international tourist attraction, given the interest of tourists in closely observing and experiencing Indian life. The study analyzes the staging presented by the Indians to meet the expectations of tourists. It sets out to show that in this staging the political-religious class which controls numerous economic activities also extends its influence into the field of tourism.
Keywords : Ethnic tourism; staging; cultural consumption; Indian elite.
