Abstract

SARDINHA CARNEIRO, Ludmila Gaudad. Este día es respeto y alegría: consideraciones sobre el género en el día de visitas a las cárceles del Distrito Federal, Brasil. Nueva antropol [online]. 2015, vol.28, n.82, pp.103-123. ISSN 0185-0636.

The most common punishment in the penal system in Brazil for those who have committed what is considered a crime is to take away a person's freedom and place the individual in a prison. By law, after arrest everyone has the right to receive visits by friends and relatives once a week. As in all social relationships, visiting day activities between prisoners, visitors and workers (agents) are strongly influenced by gender. In this study we set out to analyze the discretional practices carried out on visiting day in men's and women's prisons in the Federal District of Brazil, based on various data collection techniques (biographic interviews, in-depth interviews, semi-structured interviews, focal groups and ethnography) as well as an extensive bibliography.

Keywords : Visiting day; discrimination; gendered relationships; penal system.
