Abstract

GABAYET GONZALEZ, Natalia  and  GONZALEZ VILLARRUEL, Alejandro. Las dos muertes de Demetrio Pulido. El ritual funerario kumiay. Nueva antropol [online]. 2016, vol.29, n.84, pp.33-54. ISSN 0185-0636.

The article describes the funeral ritual of a Kumiay community called "I cry", a peculiar case of Indian communities of Baja California. The authors simultaneously use a synchronic and diachronic perspective to relate the "I cry" of Demetrio Pulido, a Kumiay master singer, exploring the various nuances of the Yumana culture related to funeral rites and describe the "I cry" ritual based on ethnographic evidence. They narrate the final twelve hours of this event and the social relationships which take place within as well as outside the community. Finally, the text explores the ambiguity between myths and realities played by singers in the Yumana society and the socio-cultural relevance of the death of one of these singers.

Keywords : funeral rites; Baja California; Kumiay; "I cry".
