Abstract

AGUILAR ROS, Alejandra. El santuario de Santo Toribio romo en los altos jaliscienses: La periferia en el Centro. Nueva antropol [online]. 2016, vol.29, n.84, pp.91-116. ISSN 0185-0636.

This article presents the emergence of the sanctuary of Santo Toribio Romo in Los Altos Jaliscienses, shows the way in which the intertwining of what is heard and seen in the media, tourism and migration make up the holy spaces and circuits of faith which have their roots in historic practices of Catholicism and the esthetics of the region. The articulation of local devotional practices with transnational threads admits that the idea of a fixed center from which the luminous power is emitted and towards which one must move is moved off-center in order to understand this sanctuary as a constellation of articulated elements which are set in motion. Understanding the performance of these historical-cultural practices as well as taking into account the movement (circularity) of persons, symbols and practices which make up a sanctuary is relevant in building new categories for understanding these kinds of studies.

Keywords : space; shrine; Saint Toribio Romo; popular religion; transnational fluxes.
