Abstract
HERMES, Bernard; OLKO, Justyna and ZRAłKA, Jarosław. En los confines del arte: Los graffiti de Nakum (Petén, Guatemala) y su contexto arquitectónico, arqueológico e iconográfico. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2001, vol.23, n.79, pp.29-69. ISSN 0185-1276.
Archaeological research performed at the Maya site of Nakum (Petén, Guatemala) in recent years has provided an excellent opportunity to document and study a large sample of pre-Columbian graffiti on various buildings located at the very heart of the site. This article discusses architectural and iconographic data related to the creation and function of this graffiti, as well as the results of analyses of its iconographic contents (e.g., glyphs and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic depictions). Available data has enabled an attempt at an analytical approach that plans to encompass several aspects like the identification of graffiti authors, dates and possible functions. Evidence from Nakum also allows questioning of prior interpretations of this type of art within the Maya culture.
