Abstract

SCANDAR, Florencia. Circular Diagrams in the Codex Pérez. Visual Rhetoric and Intermediality in Colonial Maya cosmograms. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2019, vol.41, n.114, pp.38-67.  Epub Feb 20, 2020. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2019.114.2665.

In this article, I study circular diagrams in the Códice Pérez, a document compiled by Juan Pío Pérez during the first half of the 19th century, comprised by different manuscripts from the books of Chilam Balam. These images, which represent cosmograms, are studied from different perspectives placing particular emphasis on visual rhetoric as well as on the relationship between text and image. Following an examination of each image, questions regarding their origin and function are addressed.

Keywords : Códice Pérez; Chilam Balam; circular diagrams; katun wheels; visual rhetoric; intermediality.
