Abstract

AGUILAR OCHOA, Arturo. The Conservative View of the Conquest and the Independence of Mexico in the Series of Lithographs “Historia Mexicana” by Michaud and Thomas, 1848-1849. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2022, vol.44, n.121, pp.121-184.  Epub July 31, 2023. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2022.121.2802.

This article presents for the first time eight lithographs with scenes and the main characters of the Conquest of Mexico and the consummation of Independence: Moctezuma, Hernán Cortés and Agustín de Iturbide. Through an iconological analysis that draws on the iconographic tradition and the context of the time (located in 1848 and 1849), it seeks to reveal their intentions, the media in which they were intend- ed to be disseminated, and their possible sponsors. The article also puts forward a hypothesis that seeks to connect the discourse of the images with the conservative thought that was acquiring greater clarity at the time and that henceforth marked the antagonism towards the liberal group.

Keywords : Lithography; the Conquest; the consummation of Independence; Moctezuma; Hernán Cortés; Agustín de Iturbide.
