Abstract

PICADO-GARCIA, José Daniel  and  SOLANO-MEZA, Natalia. Exhibiting the Tropical: Images at the VIII International Student Biennial of Costa Rica. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2022, vol.44, n.121, pp.397-427.  Epub July 31, 2023. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2022.121.2801.

In 1992, the College of Architects of Costa Rica organized the first architecture biennial for professionals in the country, and since 2004 student biennials have been held parallel to them. Based on a historical analysis that culminates in 2018, specifically of the images of architectural proposals exhibited at the Eighth International Student Biennial of Architecture of Costa Rica, it is suggested that there is a tendency in student proposals to replicate characteristics associated with the tropical. This concept has been put at the service of historical searches in the professional field of architecture in the country, precisely that of an identity that reflects the values of the national architectural culture.

Keywords : Tropical architecture; architecture biennial; architectural images; Costa Rica; visual analysis; tropical environments.
