Abstract

ARMESTO, Alejandra. Tenure of control of local governments and spillover electoral effects. Estud. polít. (Méx.) [online]. 2017, n.41, pp.81-103. ISSN 0185-1616.

This article shows that tenure of partisan control of local governments has a positive and curvilinear effect on parties’ performance in federal elections. This result is based on a longitudinal analysis of federal legislative elections between 1991 and 2009 in Mexico. This approach have the idea that studies about the spillover electoral effects of partisan control of government show that in recently democratized countries, such control has a positive impact on parties’ performance in elections for office at different branches or levels of government.

Keywords : Partisan control of government; local government; tenure in government; electoral performance; longitudinal analysis.
