Abstract

KORSBAEK, Leif. W. H. R. Rivers: médico, psicólogo, etnólogo y antropólogo británico, y en todo carismático. Cuicuilco [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.59, pp.41-64. ISSN 0185-1659.

The text is a portrait of W.H.R. Rivers, one of the founders of British Social Anthropology, which deals with his medical training and interest in Psychiatry as well as Anthropology, followed by a list of some of his contributions to the formation of a British Anthropological tradition. His very important contribution to the creation of Medical Anthropology is presented, as well as Rivers' way of combining Anthropology and Psychiology, which gave rise to the creation of Psychological Anthropology. A comparative analysis is also presented of the kinship system. However, the greatest stress is placed on his contribution to the development of a British style of field work, which becomes removed from laboratory anthropology. W.H.R. Rivers, who took part in the formation of British Social Anthropology is now undeservedly practically unknown, mainly because of his affiliating himself to the discredited Diffusionism of British Social Anthropology.

Keywords : Social Anthropology; Anthropology and Psychology; History of Anthropology; field work.
