Abstract

MAZZETTO, Elena  and  ROVIRA MORGADO, Rossend. Sobre la orilla del agua: en torno a la dignidad de atenpanecatl y de ciertos espacios de culto a Toci en México-Tenochtitlan. Cuicuilco [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.59, pp.93-120. ISSN 0185-1659.

This article addresses the multi-disciplinary and inter-related analysis of various liminal and border spaces on the Island of Tenochtitlan associated with both Toci worship and the highest ranking political-military positions in the ancient Mexica social hierarchy. A study of archival sources, references to Ethno-History sources in the Pre-Hispanic and Vice-Regal eras, iconographic observations and interpretative proposals imbued with Meso-American Ethnology suggest that deep semiotic connections exist between the worship of Toci-Teteo Innan and the exercise of power and political rituals among the Tenochas.

Keywords : Tenochtitlan; noble dignitaries; Toci; political ritual; liminality.
