Abstract

CRUZ SALAZAR, Tania. Experimentando California. Cambio generacional entre tzeltales y choles de la selva chiapaneca. Cuicuilco [online]. 2015, vol.22, n.62, pp.217-239. ISSN 0185-1659.

This paper analyzes generational change in relation to the cultural consumption and youthful style experienced by a group of Tzeltales and Choles living in California. The indigenous migration from Chiapas falls within the framework of neoliberal policies; the impact of these policies within the suburbs of the Northern forest region to which these youths belong, along with their experiences, are interpreted from an anthropological viewpoint of youth. The findings indicate continuities, ruptures and cultural adaptations: the willingness to belong to ethnic groups, the interest of some to improve the economy of their suburbs by investing in businesses and pastures; their disinterest in continuing with the traditional peasant life, delayed marriages, childbearing at an older age, and the evasion of commitments, as well as the tendency towards outmarriage.

Keywords : international migration; generational change; indigenous youth; migrant experience and consumption.
