Abstract

DURAN ROMERO, Gemma. Sustainable Development. A Review of the Economic Indicators of Sustainability. Inv. Econ [online]. 2000, vol.60, n.231, pp.109-138. ISSN 0185-1667.

In recent years, the need to ascertain whether there are any signs of sustainability, has led to the creation of indicators that represent the three dimensions of this process the economy, ecology and the social aspect. Said indicators are supposed to alert analysts as to the evolution, whether positive or negative, of sustainability. This article reviews the indicators that deal exclusively with the economic dimension of sustainability, more specifically, the modification of those economic indicators to do with domestic product and the concept of genuine savings. Nevertheless, the conclusion remains that, rather than one battery of independent indicators, giving isolated information about the process, it would be necessary to draw up synthetic indicators relevant to each one of these dimensions. This would enable, as a result, all the dimensions to be included within an integrated framework of analysis.
