It is shown the temporary character of the micro and small industry growth at the international level in the seventies and eighties. This process was very limited in sectoral and geographical terms, and, in some cases, it didn't exist. The positive development of the small size industries was related to the crisis of fordism during the seventies, and the industrial re­ structuring it provoked later when big industries recoverd its primeness. Also, it is indicated the ciclical evolution of the micro and small industry in Mexico during the latest years, which has been different compared with that they had in some industrialized countries a decade ago. Similarly to the other cases, small firms grew in certain sectors but not in others, and only for a limited period of time. In any case, the most important thing that small industries must do in order to improve its economic development, is their incorporation in clusters.
