Abstract

BARCELO, Alfons. Objective: Quantify Reproduction. Inv. Econ [online]. 2003, vol.62, n.245, pp.71-106. ISSN 0185-1667.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze some quantities related to the social reproduction approach. First, three strategic topics are described, namely: a) output minus input, b) output divided by input, and c) sub-systems. Nevertheless, it should be remembered that there are obstacles which make it difficult to implement these fundamental concepts, but some possible ways of surmounting these difficulties are given here (using theoretical constructs invented by Leontief, von Neumann and Sraffa). Next, two new indicators are examined; one referring to self-reproducing goods, the own surplus rate, and the other indicator applying to all basic goods, the coefficient of net reproduction. A few suggestions are put forward as to the creation of indicators within the same family, in the fields of Ecological economics and Feminist economics. Lastly, the author recommends some directions for further Research and Development.
