Abstract

SANDOVAL ROBAYO, Mary Luz. Varieties of Capitalism: An Alternative Theory to the Hegemonic Idea of Globalization. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2021, vol.66, n.241, pp.19-43.  Epub Mar 19, 2021. ISSN 0185-1918.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.2448492xe.2020.241.69975.

This article presents the theoretical dispute set forth by political science against the theory of convergence, better known in the economic and sociological fields as globalization, through the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) theory and its derivatives. The theoretical comparative analysis method is used in order to establish the characteristics of welfare models and the capital/labor ratio. The scope and limitations of capitalism’s variety theories based on historical institutionalism, path dependence and rational choice are analyzed to determine their level of statism and ability to understand change, and some of the current derivations of said theory are analyzed as well.

Keywords : welfare state; capital/labor; historical institutionalism; path dependence; rational choice.
