VELOSO, Alexandre de Lima; GARCIA CEBRIAN, Lucía Isabel  and  MARCUELLO-SERVOS, Chaime. State and Statistics. The Importance of Official Statistical Systems for Modern Democracies. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2021, vol.66, n.243, pp.55-78.  Epub Jan 31, 2022. ISSN 0185-1918.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.2448492xe.2021.243.69278.

This work seeks to analyze the relationship between the state and statistics and understand the changes in the use of statistical data by the constituted authority and by society throughout history. In the past, statistics were used as an instrument of government control over the population, but over time they have become a tool for citizen participation, helping to ensure the proper functioning of democratic societies. Official statistical institutes took on a decisive role for this change. Today, the international statistical system is legitimized as the major global provider of reliable, relevant and useful statistical information.

Keywords : state; society; official statistics institutes.
