Abstract

GOROSITO, Ulises. Theological Turn and Evential Turn in Totality and Infinity. Diánoia [online]. 2023, vol.68, n.90, pp.53-74.  Epub Oct 30, 2023. ISSN 0185-2450.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iifs.18704913e.2023.90.1978.

In this article I examine two surpluses described in Totality and Infinity: the element and the face. I present in the first place how these exceed the perceptible, understandable and tamable. Whereas the philosophy of element, according to my reading, allows to describe the way in which there is what is, i.e., the material happening of presence, the face of the Other shows a presence that is not constituted but expresses and signifies itself. In the second place, I will present some problems in both surpluses that will lead me to conclude with the theological character of Levinasian philosophy regarding both the Other and the element. Still, I consider that the Levinasian analysis of the element are very fruitful for a phenomenology of surplus.

Keywords : surplus; element; face; phenomenon; ethics.
