Abstract

REICHERT, Rafal. El situado of New Spain for the support of the Spanish fortressess in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean during the 17th century. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2012, n.46, pp.47-81. ISSN 2448-6922.

This research focuses on the study of military expenditures borne by the Viceroyalty of New Spain in the maintenance of the grancaribeños fortresses along the 17th century. In this sense, we analyze monetary values given to these forts, such as strategic and political phenomena around distribution and management. It will present comparisons of the movements of the royal cash of silver from Mexico with respect to other expenses to demonstrate the importance of the Gulf-Caribbean in the Spanish defense system in America. Finally, it is important to note that the research provides new information relevant to the economic history of military expenditure in New Spain during the 17th century, a subject hitherto little known to historians.

Keywords : prison; situado; military spending; Wider Caribbean; New Spain; 17th century.
