This paper describes the early founding of Tridentine seminaries in Peru as part of the measures promoted by Philip il from 1568, designed to exert greater control over the Indian Church; the church policy laid by the junta magna and the impulse given by viceroy Francisco de Toledo to found seminaries. it is also shown the application of this policy by the Audiencia of Charcas in the bishopric of La Plata, and how the seminary of that diocese was formally established by the pressure exerted by royal ministers.

Keywords : Seminaries; Church in Charcas; Francisco de Toledo; Third council of Lima; La Plata City; Sucre.
