Abstract

HIDALGO NUCHERA, Patricio. Salary reductions, vacancies and unassisted salaries as solutions to the problem of novohispanic benemeritos. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2016, n.54, pp.74-91. ISSN 2448-6922.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ehn.2016.01.002.

The descendants of the conquerors and first settlers of New Spain, who had been politically irrelevant individuals in the 'Indian benemeritos' class since the mid 16th century, pursued royal grace in reward of their ancestors' services. In order to alleviate their situation, which might have placed social peace in the kingdom or even the rulers' authority in danger, the viceroys of New Spain instituted some palliative measures. This work relies on various sources, but particularly on letters and memories of New Spain's viceroys.

Keywords : Benemeritos; Conquerors; Encomienda; Magistrates; Salary reductions and vacancies.
