Abstract

ROVIRA MORGADO, Rossend. “Se ha de suplicar que los regimientos de esta ciudad sean veinticuatrías”: The cabildo of Granada as an inter-ethnic institutional proposal for the republic council of early Colonial Mexico City. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2016, n.55, pp.80-98. ISSN 2448-6922.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ehn.2016.08.001.

We present here a succinct reflection and a preliminary consideration on a poorly-researched and misunderstood historical event occurred at Mexico City in 1562: the proposal of unify all urban political corporations in one cabildo at likeness the twenty-four inter-ethnic regiments present in the Spanish city council of Granada. We focus on institutional and governmental conflicts and overlaps, and we also reflect on Spanish authorities who could have been the architects of this new political design. We briefly discuss the reasons why this Granada-shaped cabildo couldn’t finally have flourished in Mexico City.
