Abstract

SUAREZ RIVERA, Manuel. Dispute of Fire. The Provenance Brand of the Library of the Royal University of Mexico. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2018, n.59, pp.83-109.  Epub Nov 06, 2020. ISSN 2448-6922.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24486922e.2018.59.63116.

The article contributes elements to establish a “brand of fire” with the 18th century coat of arms from the Hispanic monarchy, as a brand of provenance from the Real University of Mexico and not of the Colegio Máximo de San Pedro y San Pablo de la ciudad de México, as traditionally has been settled since 1925 in the different catalogs that exist on the brands of fire of the books from New Spain. At first, I identify the origin of the historiographic and bibliographic error that has taken for granted that this mark belonged to a Jesuit college, then I offer a brief history of the Library of the Royal University and then I offer documentary and statistical elements that allow to establish definitively the origin of the fire mark with the coat of arms as a hallmark of the university corporation.

Keywords : fire brands; Library of the Royal University of Mexico; Colegio Máximo de San Pedro y San Pablo; history of colonial libraries in Mexico.
