Abstract

RIVERO HERNANDEZ, Iván  and  PASTOR TELLEZ, Daniela. The Next Day: An Injunction Ruled by Hernán Cortés on the Booty of Tenochtitlan. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2024, n.70, pp.247-263.  Epub Apr 05, 2024. ISSN 2448-6922.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24486922e.2024.70.77795.

The present document could be the first legal act made by Hernán Cortés after Tenochtitlan was seized. Through this document -an injunction- the royal and army officers were required to collect the booty, and to prevent the conquerors, Indian and Spaniard, to continue looting and plundering the Mexica city. Due to its significance as a historical source, it is our purpose to make it public to scholars and anybody interested alike. Preceding the document, there is a section devoted to introduce the subjects it contains, and another one showing how it ended up where it is at present: the Helmerich Center for American Research, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Keywords : booty; royal fifth; Hernán Cortés; conquest; Mexico-Tenochtitlan; looting.
