Abstract
GARCIA TARGA, Juan and GUSSINYER ALFONSO, Jordi. Los primeros templos cristianos en el área maya: Yucatán y Belice, 1545-1585. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2004, vol.25, pp.95-119. ISSN 0185-2574.
The study of early religious buildings brings a way of approach to material reality of maya indigenous communities that suffered the impact of a new faith, through the distribution of sacred space and different building techniques. At its own rhythms, maya communities generated new architectural forms by the combination of local tradition, the new cult guide lines and, specially, material and human availability to create these new places of collective cult. The purpose of this study is to analyze the different variants, viewing them as a proof of the cultural capacity of syncretism developed in this region during the first years of Hispanic rule.
