Abstract

SEGOVIA LIGA, Argelia. La estela 1 de Calakmul: Breve acercamiento a la imagen. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2006, vol.28, pp.67-81. ISSN 0185-2574.

The knowledge of geometric structures and a sense of spatial orientation were not unknown to the ancient Maya. The construction of many Classic period pieces reveal compositions that have a symmetrical relationship and it is possible to view this Maya concept of symmetry by means of using grid lines placed upon the face of these monuments. The case of Stela 1 from Calakmul is illustrative of the utility of this method of analysis in showing the existence of geometrically symmetrical segments in which are enclosed a series of iconographic and glyphic elements which have a direct relationship to the meaning of each of their segments. Within the surface of the Stela, each of these components maintains an intrinsic dialogue upon which depends the meaning of the monument.
