Abstract

PETRICH, Perla. Espacios sagrados entre los mayas del lago Atitlán (Guatemala). Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2007, vol.29, pp.141-153. ISSN 0185-2574.

The purpose is to raise some questions regarding the multiple constructions and reconstructions of the sacred spaces between the actual Mayas of one village of lake Atitlan in Guatemala: San Pedro, speaking the language tzutujil. The usual perspective is the proposal of Maurice Godelier, who considers the sacred as a consequence of social relations, and a way of consolidating established norms, reproducing an established social system. This article analyzes, using examples drawn from oral tradition, the division that operates in these areas (a sacred geography), through which a permanent control of the society is established.
