Abstract

DZIB CAN, Ubaldo. Ethnicity Fractured: Construction of Mayan Political Dominance over the Population Mixed Chicbul Cottage, Campeche, 1969-late Twentieth Century. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2014, vol.43, pp.127-156. ISSN 0185-2574.

This paper analyzes the construction of the political dominance of a group of Mayan immigrants from Northern Campeche, over half of the mestizo population of a community located in the Southern State. This situation contrasts with most localities of this area, traditionally dominated -since the colonization process of the second half of the 20th century- by the rural mestizo colonists who came from the central and northern regions of the country. This article aims to show how ethnicity defines ongoing processes of the construction of cultural identities and differences not only between, but also within groups. These identities and differences, even within ethnic groups, constitute the conditions of constant negotiations concerning the boundaries and hierarchies between them.

Keywords : Ethnicity; Maya; mestizos; identities and cultural differences.
